The rifle woman

One of my most vivid memories was eating breakfast in Mother Berniece's kitchen when I was going to OSU. She was doing dishes at the sink looking out of the window. All of a sudden she ran toward the fireplace, grabbed the lever action 22 rifle from the mantle and ran out of the back door. As I followed her out through the gargage to the area near the clothsline, I heard a shot coming from where she stood. Then I saw two men in the pasture below with guns. She said, "Get off my land." They said, "We shot a bird and are just retrieving it." She shot again above their heads and said, "I said get off my land." They turned and left with out the bird. Daddy Harry, as usual, threw bird seed out again under the blackjack tree in the back that evening.

  1. Scaring the boys... same story only the front yard... I saw go for the rifle and run in the front yard and fired in the air. Two boys were crossing the fence near the road and scattered back across in the other direction. Mother Bernice turned around and muttered that she ought not to have done that but the boys were warned.. before..

It is as clear as a bell in my mind -- the boys stopping and scattering back in the opposite direction... but I wonder if Kelly told his story so well that I am thinking of his story.. Anyway, she was not to be trifled with if you were on her land and she was near her rifle..
    No trifling
    with
    a rifle no matter
    how short
    the owner was,
    or her gender

There was an old Granny wth a rifle
with her you did not trifle
    if upon her land
    she'd give you a hand
but her trigger finger she would not stifle
