Dark bars and dialogue
In 1994, an LSU Journalism Professor (and Thursday night harp player) by the name of Phil Ward took it upon himself to document what was going on at Phil Brady’s every Thursday – a feat that few have accomplished. He took photographs between his harmonica sets, and even though the dim lighting is enough to make any photographer cringe, he didn’t use any extra illumination.
“I wanted to capture them in what Wynton Marsalis later identified as ‘dialogue,’” said Ward. “With no flash on, I could get an intimate snapshot of a look or a smile, on-stage or off.”
Contacting him about his photographs inspired him to unearth and scan negatives – some of which might be seeing daylight for the first time in these pages.
